Devils on Horseback are a delicious sweet-but-savoury appetiser made with prunes and bacon and served hot.
Unsurprisingly, such an evocatively named dish has prompted various dramatic explanations of its origins, including the suggestion that it refers to the Norman invasion of England in 1066, during which French knights supposedly covered their armour with bacon in order to frighten villagers with their grotesque appearance!
Sadly, there’s little evidence to back up these tales. Although the name appears in print from at least 1800, the true story remains a riddle wrapped in a mystery, much like the prunes wrapped in bacon that form the heart of this dish. Here at the Hinds Head we soak the prunes in Armagnac, inject them with mango chutney and wrap them in pancetta before cooking them under the grill.
Devils on Horseback has become one of our signature dishes and can be seen on our menu all year round.
Please see our gallery for more of our signature dishes.

After, they will enjoy a quintessentially British luncheon with us and an English Burleighs Gin and Tonic. Please join us in wishing the RREC a happy 60th anniversary.
