Bray: One Village, Seven Michelin Stars

Bray is, by almost any measure, an extraordinary place. A riverside parish with a three-mile frontage on the Thames, tucked between Maidenhead and Windsor, it manages to feel entirely removed from the pace of the world — and yet it’s barely 25 minutes from London.

It also happens to hold a quite remarkable distinction. This small, quietly beautiful English village is home to 7 Michelin stars: The Fat Duck ***, The Waterside Inn ***, The Hinds Head *.

It’s no coincidence that Simon Aleyn — the famed Vicar of Bray, whose story is carved into the oak table in our own Vicar’s Room — chose to plant himself here for decades. Some places simply have that pull.

So next time you visit us, give yourself an extra hour and stroll the village properly. Here’s where to wander:

  • St Michael’s Church — a Grade II* listed parish church dating to 1293, with a Lich Gate from 1448 on Church Lane. Walk through it and feel the centuries.
  • The Thames riverbank — follow Ferry Road down to the water, where grand riverside properties stretch along the bank and the resident geese hold court. One of the most serene walks in Berkshire.
  • Church Lane — one of the most idyllic streets in England, lined with historic cottages, colourful doors, and seasonal blooms that have seen Bray compete in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition for years.
  • The High Street — a Grade II listed war memorial, a vine-clad cottage, and centuries of listed buildings. The kind of high street that makes you put your phone away and simply look.
  • Bray Lake — a peaceful 2.5km circular walk around the water’s edge, tree-lined and unhurried. The perfect way to earn your lunch.

We’ll have a table waiting for you when you’re ready.
